简介:Mehmet Saadeddin Öztürk is an Assistant Professor at the Biomedical Engineering Institute of Boğazici University, Istanbul, where he also serves as Director of the Advanced Technologies Research and Development Center and as Advisor to the Rector. He received his BSc in Electronics Engineering from Kadir Has University, his MSc in Manufacturing Engineering from Boston University, and his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he worked on mesoscopic fluorescence tomography under Professor Xavier Intes. He then joined the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg as a Marie Curie postdoctoral fellow in Robert Prevedel’s group, where he developed intravital optical imaging systems for longitudinal breast cancer monitoring in live animal models. His research sits at the intersection of biomedical optics, quantitative imaging, and diagnostic instrumentation. His current work spans three directions: mesoscopic fluorescence molecular tomography for deep tissue and preclinical imaging, label-free optical spectroscopy combined with machine learning for rapid microbial identification, and markerless circulating tumour cell detection for cancer diagnostics. His work has appeared in Communications Biology, Science Advances, and Biomedical Optics Express, among others.

讲座内容简介:Biomedical optical technologies provide unique opportunities to interrogate biological systems across spatial scales, from molecular and cellular signatures to three-dimensional tissue-level disease progression. This seminar presents the development and application of optical imaging and spectroscopic approaches for disease monitoring and diagnostic applications, with particular emphasis on cancer.

The first part will focus on mesoscopic fluorescence molecular tomography (MFMT), a three-dimensional optical imaging approach developed for quantitative visualization of fluorescent reporters in thick biological tissues. Applications ranging from engineered three-dimensional tumor models to longitudinal in vivo monitoring of breast cancer will be presented, together with current efforts toward semi-automated imaging, optical-property estimation, and quantitative reconstruction.

The second part will address label-free optical characterization for diagnostic applications. Optical scattering and Raman spectroscopic signatures provide complementary information on cellular morphology, composition, and biochemical state without requiring conventional molecular labels. Current work explores how these intrinsic optical signatures can be combined with computational analysis and machine-learning methods for cell classification, liquid-biopsy applications, and rapid identification of biological samples.

Finally, the seminar will discuss the translation of these technologies from experimental optical systems toward integrated biomedical devices. Particular attention will be given to the challenges of instrumentation, quantitative validation, automation, and artificial-intelligence-assisted analysis required to move biomedical optical technologies from laboratory demonstrations toward practical diagnostic platforms。
